Dramatis personae

Fol­lowing my previous post, here is my assess­ment of the cur­rent AI dramatis personae:

• OpenAI: clearly, hilariously, the bad one

However, I think there’s a fair chance that hard­ware and soft­ware both change such that most AI sys­tems that most people use run on their phones, in their browser tabs, rather than in far-off data centers. This is obvi­ously a healthier scenario, so I am rooting for none of the above. Instead, my interest is fixed on a char­acter waiting in the wings: the tight, light, mul­ti­modal “cognitive core”.
